Dota 2 Recalibration: Should You Reset Your MMR?

Recalibration is free and optional, and it can move you down as easily as up. When it makes sense and how to play those games.

Dota 2 recalibration lets you ask the game to re-measure your MMR. It is free and optional, it only appears when your account is eligible, and it can move you down as easily as up. Before you press the button, it helps to know how calibration works since patch 7.33, because it is not the old ten-games-then-a-medal system any more.

How calibration works now

Since 7.33 (April 2023) every account has an MMR and a Rank Confidence. Calibration is not a fixed number of games: it ends when the game is confident enough about your level. Low confidence means bigger MMR swings per game; high confidence settles at about 25 MMR a game.

  • New accounts start with low confidence, so their first ranked games move a lot.
  • Returning players lose a little confidence over time, so a break means bigger swings when they come back.
  • Seasonal resets are suspended. Steam Support says so, and none has been announced through 7.41f.

How to recalibrate in Dota 2

  1. Open Settings, then Account.
  2. Look for MMR Recalibration. If you don’t see it, your account isn’t eligible right now.
  3. Confirm. Your next ranked games re-inform your MMR. Steam Support describes this as the next 10 ranked games.

Should you recalibrate?

Recalibration moves you to where you play now, in either direction.
Your situationOur advice
You improved a lot since you last calibratedYes, it is what recalibration is for
You came back after a long breakMaybe. Play a week first; your confidence is already low
You are on a losing streakNo. Fix the tilt before you reset anything
You want a higher medal fastNo. Recalibration measures you; it doesn’t lift you

How to play your Dota 2 recalibration games

  • Play your best role and two or three heroes. This is not the week to learn something new.
  • Play when you are fresh. Late-night games after work are where calibrations go wrong.
  • Communicate early. A calm “I’m going to play for the late game” prevents a lot of lost games.
  • Don’t chase. If you lose two in a row, stop for the day. The games will still be there tomorrow.

What happens after recalibration

Your first games after recalibrating swing more than usual, because your Rank Confidence starts low again. Your medal settles once the game is confident, which can take longer than the first evening. Judge the result after a week of normal games, not after the first three.

Don’t use a second account instead

Some players make a new account to “recalibrate” without risking their main. Valve treats that as smurfing. In September 2023 it banned 90,000 smurf accounts and said it traced each one back to its main account, and later waves followed. The built-in recalibration exists so you don’t need to take that risk.

When a calibration service makes sense

Our rank calibration service is for players who want those games played at a higher level than they can manage today. Be aware that it means a booster plays on your account, and Valve’s rules don’t allow account sharing; our safety guide covers that honestly. If you’d rather keep full control, a few coaching sessions before you recalibrate is the safer way to land higher.

Questions

Can recalibration drop my rank?

Yes. It measures where you play now. If you play worse than your current rank, you move down.

How often can I recalibrate?

Only when the option appears for your account. Guides describe it as about once a year.

Is there still a yearly reset for everyone?

Not at the moment. Seasonal resets are suspended.
