Dota 2 Ranks and MMR: Every Medal Explained

Herald to Immortal: the MMR behind every medal and star, why your gains aren’t always 25, and where most players actually sit.

Dota 2 ranks go from Herald to Immortal. Each medal below Immortal has five stars, and every star covers a slice of MMR. Valve doesn’t publish the exact numbers, but the ranges below have stayed stable for years and match what players see in their profiles. Here is the whole ladder, how much a win is worth now, and where most of the player base sits.

Dota 2 ranks and their MMR

Approximate MMR ranges, as published by esports.net. Valve does not publish official numbers.

Immortal has no stars. Instead you get a number on your region’s leaderboard. A separate line matters at the very top: since March 2025, players above 8,500 MMR play in Immortal Draft, need a registered official name and can’t queue ranked as a party.

How much MMR does a win give?

Not a flat 25 any more. Since patch 7.33 (April 2023) Dota uses a rating system with Rank Confidence. When the game is unsure about your level, wins and losses move you more. As confidence grows, a game settles at around 25 MMR either way. Stop playing for a while and confidence slowly drops, so your next games swing harder again.

Where most players are

Approximate, from Esports Tales using Stratz data (August 2026). Sites that track players lean towards higher ranks.
MedalShare of ranked players
Heraldabout 12%
Guardianabout 19%
Crusaderabout 20%
Archonabout 18%
Legendabout 13%
Ancientabout 9%
Divineabout 6%
Immortalabout 4%

The middle of the ladder is Crusader and Archon. If you are in Legend you are already above the average player, and Ancient puts you in roughly the top fifth. That context helps when a climb feels slow: each medal above Legend is played by fewer people, and every game gets closer.

What you need to play ranked

  • A unique phone number linked to your account. Virtual numbers are rejected, and if you remove a number you wait three months before linking one again.
  • Hours played. Valve has required 100 hours of play for ranked since 2019.
  • A clean record. You can’t queue ranked while you still owe Low Priority games. Our Low Priority guide explains how that works.

How to climb, honestly

  1. Play two or three heroes in the role you queue for. Being very good at a few beats being average at many.
  2. Fix one habit at a time. Dying early in lane, missing stacks, or buying the same items every game. Pick one and watch for it.
  3. Stop after two losses. Tilt costs more MMR than any patch change.
  4. Watch your own replays. Ten minutes of your deaths teaches more than a pro stream.

If you want a second pair of eyes, Dota 2 coaching is the way to improve the rank you play at. If you want the rank itself, the MMR boost sets a start and target and logs every match.

Questions

Questions

Does Valve publish the MMR for each medal?

No. The ranges here are the community’s long-standing figures. Your profile shows your medal and stars, which is what matchmaking and other players see.

Is there a seasonal rank reset?

Not right now. Steam Support says seasonal resets are suspended. You can choose to recalibrate once it is offered to your account; see our recalibration guide.

Why did I lose more MMR than I won?

The system weighs how expected each result was. Losing to a team rated lower than yours costs more than losing to a stronger one, and low Rank Confidence makes every change bigger.

Do core and support have separate MMR?

They did after 2019. Reports since then are mixed, so check your profile, which shows what your account uses.
